Salamander Chronicles

Salamander, Evolution, and Awesomeness

About me

Posted by Vinny under

I am a Ph.D. candidate at Ohio University studying the role of microhabitat in the evolutionary ecology of Plethodontid salamanders.  In general I am interested in all aspects of herpetology, ecology, and evolution.  This blog serves as documentation of my journey through academia.  I will primarily post updates on my research, but I will also post other experiences related to science including experiences in the field and comments on recent research articles.

  1. Devin Thompson Said,

Love all the info about salamanders. My two home-schooled kids and I are wondering when this annual migration of salamanders might be expected this year, with the very long, very cold winter we’ve experienced. Wondering if you have any speculation on this. We live on the banks of the Big Darby northwest of Columbus, and there are perfect vernal pool-type swampy areas directly behind our house. My kids would love to witness this, as they’re both fascinated by salamanders.

  2. Vinny Said,

Thanks! I would also say it has already happened, at least in part, down where I am in Athens, OH. However, the conditions have not been really great yet, so I am guessing there will be another batch of salamanders moving soon. Even with the recent cold snap, the next night that it is 50 degrees or above and we get a warm rain there should be more movement. If you haven’t seen salamanders there before, there is no guarantee they will be there, but there should at minimum be some frogs. Hope that helps!

  3. Ryan Kerney Said,

I just came across your website while looking for range maps. It is terrific and I hope you manage to pick up where you last left off during your postdoctoral research. It is great to see such a well curated resource of salamander information and personal reflections.

    all the best,
    Ryan

  4. Vinny Said,

Awesome, thanks! I know this is literally more than a year late, but I basically stopped adding blog posts and things got busy with the postdoc and job searches. I am at the University of Scranton now though, so it looks like we are nearby! I will be starting salamander work up here soon (managed my first ver four-toed salamander at Lackawanna State Park last weekend.
